Kassandra and the Dragon
by Kristen E.
Once upon a time when dragons, ghouls and goblins were around, there lived a girl named Kassandra. Kassandra knew she was special. She just didn't know in what way. Kassandra loved to talk to all the creatures that lived in the forest behind her house. Now, of course, the animals didn't talk back to her in a way she could understand.
One day Kassandra was pretending to talk to a squirrel when she felt a big gust of wind come over her, then it just suddenly faded away. Kassandra went back to chattering with the squirrel and all of a sudden she heard the squirrel say, "Oh, isn't it a very nice day."
Kassandra just said, "Yes it is." Then, when she had processed the idea that she was talking to a squirrel, she ran home thinking to her self, "It was just a dream, just a dream."
When she got home she heard her mother singing to herself and Kassandra thought, "It can't be a dream. My mom is singing while baking cookies." Kassandra thought, "My mom always bakes cookies on Saturday afternoon." This particular afternoon her schedule had not been as she planned it. She went to sleep that night as if she had any other day, but in her heart she knew she could talk to animals.
The next morning, she awoke with a feeling that an animal was in trouble. So she got dressed quickly and didn't even bother to eat breakfast. She ran outside as if running for her life. She saw there in the garden a dragon sobbing as if she'd eaten a spoiled head of cabbage. Kassandra knew right away that this was no laughing matter. Maybe one of the dragon's family members had died.
So Kassandra went right up to the dragon and asked, "What seems to be the matter?"
The dragon didn't look up. She simply said, "My brother has gone looking for a castle to guard. I'm afraid to be all alone in the cave." So Kassandra offered the dragon one of her father's best watchdogs and when the dragon said, "What is your name?" Kassandra replied with her name. Kassandra asked the dragon what hers was, but the dragon said, "Dragons don't get names." It was then that Kassandra and the dragon became friends. From then on the dragon and Kassandra lived happily ever after as friends.
