The Times I Split My Chin Open
by Marelle, 5th grade
A terrible thing happened to me in the kitchen one day. My brother and I were having sliding races on our stomachs on the brand new, hardwood floor. We started by running as fast as we could, and then jumping and sliding across the floor on our stomachs. Unfortunately when we jumped my brother landed on top of me. My head slammed down on the floor so hard my chin split right open. My mom heard me screaming, grabbed a washcloth and rushed me to the hospital. I clutched the washcloth to my chin to help stop the bleeding.
When we arrived at the hospital the washcloth was drenched in blood. The nurse took me to the emergency room and started to numb my chin. Once she had numbed it she put nine stitches in. By the time she was done there was thunder and lighting and it was raining cats and dogs. They gave us a free umbrella and we left at 10:30. Finally we got home at 12:00 and I was practically sleepwalking. I got to sleep easily that night for it was far past my bedtime.
A terrible thing happened to me at my friend, Liz's, house one day. We were making a pillow/ blanket fort. After we had finally got it to stay put so we could climb inside, it was time for me to go. Liz's mom told us to pack up our stuff and we could buy something at 7/11.We had everything away except for one blanket. Liz's mom said to hurry up and put it away so we could leave. I was standing on the blanket but Liz did not notice. She pulled the blanket the other way and it pulled my feet out from under my body.
I fell and hit my chin flat on the floor. I had split my chin open for the second time in my life! My friend's mom called my dad and he rushed over to pick me up. He got there and took me directly to my doctor's office. Unfortunately, my doctor's assistant, who was very old and shaky, was the only one there who could put stitches in my chin. He didn't numb it right to start out with, and then it hurt a bunch when he was actually putting the stitches in. In about 10 to15 minutes all three stitches were in. We left the hospital and I went home to watch a movie.
A terrible thing happened to me at my house one day. It was December 1, 2003 at 7:00 am. My brother was teasing me and telling me that I couldn't touch him. I charged at him when he was in front of the T.V. He fell trying to escape and I tripped over his legs and headed straight for the T.V. I asked him, "Did I split my chin open?" as I held up my chin for him to see. "No," he answered. Then he ran to the phone and called my mom to let her know that I had split my chin open. I was very frustrated that that was the third time in a row that I split my chin open! My mom soon arrived at my house prepared to take me to the hospital.
We arrived at the hospital and filled out a small sheet of paper. I watched T.V. in the kids center as I waited for the nurse to call my name. She did and took me to a room where she numbed my chin. A man called Dr. Hunt got out a kit and started to stitch up my chin under the bright light. After about 30 minutes, we were in the car on our way home. My mom dropped me off for school and so far, I haven't split my chin open again (knock on wood!)
